ENVIRONMENTAL WORK

My vision is a Club that can focus on our greatest challenge- Global Warming - while respecting and supporting the traditions of our proud heritage in wilderness protection.

I have been involved in environmental conservation work since 1992. During that time, I have had the opportunity to work iin a wide range of issues. Some of my most passionite are listed below:

My experience in Forest and Wildlands Preservation-
My earliest environmental work was in the area of forest and wildland protection. My focus was on the local mixed-mesophytic forests in the rich Cumberland Plateau, such as the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky and the Big South Fork National Recreational Area in Kentucky and Tennessee.

My local wildlands work has involved advocacy such as writing official comments, leading numerous outings, and performing trailwork all for the protection and enjoyment of our public lands. Clearly wildlands and the protection of forests is where the roots of the Club are, and should remain a prominent feature of our work. It is the protection of wildlands and wild places that define our core values.

My passion: the Sierra Club Outings Program-
I came into the Club as an Outings leader. I have been leading Sierra Club Outings since 1992 and teach a Beginning Backpacking class for the local Sierra Club with my husband Joey Shadowen since 2001. I believe the Outings Program is one of the very best ways to engage and welcome members into the Sierra Club and I support a strong Outings presence in the work of the Club.

My work on an issue of great urgency: Mountaintop Removal-
I have been invoved with this issue for many years, but it has taken on greater urgency now due to the pace of the destruction to forest land and headwater streams in Kentucky, West Virginia and beyond. I have engaged the many environmental leaders across the Club whom I have worked with over the years to bring attention to this practice, which disproportionally affects the working poor and is destroying the Appalachan Mountain culture.

(a favorite clip....singer Kathy Mattea learns about Mountaintop Removal from West Virginia activists and Sierra Club members)

I lead regular outings to local Mountaintop Removal sites to engage the pubic and fellow activists, because it is difficult to understand the scope until you can see these sites firsthand. If you would like to see a site, contact me and I will find a way to get you there.

My experience with a totally rewarding program: Inner City Outings-
A program to enable "at risk" children a comprehensive outdoor experience. My husband became a leader in the Inner City Outings program in 1992 and was a founding leader for all of the programs that exist in our home state of Kentucky today (one in Louisville and one in Lexington). Every month, along with other volunteers, we hold meetings in our home to find recreational opportunities for the children. We are currently working with three agencies: The Lexington Kid's Cafe, Manchester Center and Ashland Elementary.
