National Sierra Club Council of Club Leaders Chair: 9/2005
to 1/2008
The Council functions as an advisory body to the Board of Directors
on Chapter and regional concerns. It is composed of one delegate
from each Chapter, Sierra Club California, and the Sierra Student
Coalition.
As Chair of the Council, my role has been to advise the Board,
attend every Board meeting, participate as a liaison in many of
the Board's initiatives, and work directly with the Board as the
principle volunteer liaison representing Chapters. Being involved
with every single Chapter in the Club and thier ledership has been
an invaluable training ground for becoming a Board member. This
has been an especially important role for me because connecting
our work at the grassroots level is the heart of our success. If
you elect me to the Board, not only will I be able to hit the ground
running, but I will also have the experience of having an immediate
and personal connection to each and every Chapter and the Sierra
Student Coalition.
Council of Club Leaders Executive Committee: 9/2004 to
1/2008
I served as Secretary and Fifth Officer prior to becoming Chair.
Communications and Education Governance Committee: 7/2005 to 1/2008
This committee oversees the communication and education strategies
of the Club, including its publishing arms — Sierra Club Books
and SIERRA magazine — and its media and marketing strategies. It
also provides advice on external and internal Club communications
matters. I provided my professional
skills in media and communications to advise in the conversion
of the Club’s online capabilities to enable us to more effectively
reach out to a younger audience.

within the Club to objectively review our elections process.
National Purpose, Local Action Regional Facilitator, 2003-2004
Sierra Summit Regional Coordinator, 2005
Smart Energy Solutions Coordination Group, 2007
Cool Cities Steering Committee, 2007
Cumberland Chapter Mountaintop Removal Task Force, Chair:
2008-2009
I chair a coalition of Kentucky activists and National support on stopping the
practice of Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining.
Cumberland (Kentucky) Chapter Chair: 3/2002
to 2/2005
Served as Chapter Chair during two major national Club initiatives
originating from
Kentucky: a Confined Factory Feeding Operation (CAFO) suit involving
Tyson Foods, and a legal challenge to Peabody Coal, which was one
of the first major fights that became the start of the Midwest
Coal Rush Campaign. Our Chapter’s small but effective base of volunteers,
organizing staff, and legal professionals, plus their collective
and unforgettable sacrifices and teamwork, led to our success in
both initiatives.
While Chapter Chair, the Cumberland Chapter won the Club’s National
Fundraising award for their work in raising financial support for
the Peabody Coal fight.
I also built the personnel infrastructure to hire for our first
Chapter Staff position during my tenure as Chair.
Cumberland Chapter Council Delegate: 3/2002 to 12/2008
Within two years as Council Delegate for the Cumberland Chapter,
I was elected to the Council ExCom and the following year became
Council Chair.
Cumberland Chapter Vice Chair: 3/2001 to 3/2002 and 2/2005 to 2/2006
Cumberland Chapter Executive Committee: 2/2003 to 12/2007
Cumberland Chapter Newsletter Editorial Board: 1994 to present.
I also served as contact for the following Chapter roles:
Wilderness/ Wildlands (2003-2007) State Forests/Lands (2005-2009)
Political Co-Chair (2006) Sprawl (1998-2008), Air Quality (2004-2008)
Bluegrass Group Chair: 1/1995 to 3/1997
Bluegrass Group Vice Chair: 1/1995 to 3/1997
Cool Cities State Coordinator (Kentucky): 2008
"Lane Boldman is an independent thinker.
Her thoughtful, disciplined approach would be a valued addition
to the Board of Directors. I first encountered Lane's ability
to get things done during the 'National Purpose-Local Action' project
when she balanced the job of Regional Facilitator while simultaneously
leading a legal battle against Peabody Coal, the world's largest
coal company.
I have watched with awe as she has graciously
lead as Chair of the Council of Club Leaders, enhancing communications
and understanding between and among the Board and the Council Delegates.
There is not a Chapter in the Sierra Club that would not benefit
from having Lane serve as a Board member."
Lisa Renstrom, Sierra Club Board of Directors and
Immediate Past President
