My vision is a Club that focuses its collective energy into a
powerful movement. A Club where we will attract bright, young and
diverse activists who work with our existing base of experienced
leaders, creating a combination that is unstoppable.
I have a wide range of interests and I have
worked on a range of projects within my region and beyond. Here
is just a sample:
I think the Council is one of the more exciting entities I have volunteered for.
Working with approximately 70 of the Club's most experienced, locally-based
leaders has been an exceptionally rewarding experience. I belive that local,
state-based leaders are the backbone of the Club, and I have been honored to
serve as their Chair for over two years.
I work with a committee of a dozen local Club activists to bring
visibility to the issue of Mountaintop Removal. I am particularly
focused on the effects that this practice has on the rural communities
of Appalachia and the effects to our national forests.
My first activist experiences involved protecting our National Forests and wilderness
areas. Protecting our public lands is a core value of the Sierra Club. As a
Director, you will find me to be a strong advocate for public lands issues.
State Coordinator for the Cool Cities initiative in Kentucky.
Project Coordinator for events in Kentucky.
As Chapter Chair in a coal-belt state, my Chapter led some of
the earliest fights against the new wave of coal-fired power plants,
which is now the focus of the National Coal Campaign. My Chapter
successfully stoped one of the largest proposed plants and I have
been heavily immersed in Energy and Global Warming fights since
that time. In my role as Council Chair, I worked closely with the
Smart Energy Solutions team to provide feedback and consensus from
Council Delegates and
others in structuring our current Energy Policy.
Outings Leader since 1994- My first experience in the Club was
through the Outings Program. I believe the Outings program, and
the ability for people to have a wilderness experience, is essential
for connecting our members to our core issues. I currently teach
backpacking classes and lead several outings annually.
Inner City Outings: My husband became a leader in this program
for "at risk" children in 1996 and was a founding leader
for the two programs that exist in our home state of Kentucky.
Every month, along with other volunteers, we hold meetings in our
home to find outdoor recreational
opportunities for these children, working with three agencies.
I do not believe it is enough to simply be qualified and experienced within
the Sierra Club itself. If we are to succeed in our mission, we need people
who have a broad base of experience throughout the environmental community.
